HOMECOMING.......Sunday

Good mornin' brothas and sistas.  What a beautiful musical number.  It felt and sounded like I was back in Peru.  It is soo good to see you all here after 2 short years many things have changed, (change of bishopric, Nate Baker is freakishly tall, many new faces) but the spirt, love and support that I feel from all you is the same and I am very grateful for that.

Those who were present at my farewell might remember that I had commented that my favorite primary song was the missionary one that says I hope they call me on a mission when I have grown a foot or two.  I had mentioned as well that even though I had not grown a foot or two I could not wait and I was going anyways. Well I want you all to know how glad I am for going when I did.  To my disappointment I didn’t have to let the hem out on any of my pants but in other ways, I feel like I have grown several feet.

On my mission I have learned and grown and have gained many life experiences that will forever help me to maintain a righteous service-filled life. As a missionary our purpose is to invite others to come unto Christ and we achieve this objective as WE come to Christ ourselves.  As we grow to know him and as we learn to love him and follow him more perfectly, we develop the ability and the strong burning desire to teach all of God’s children how they too can love him and serve him.  We take them by the hand and go down the same path that we have walked and are walking to get to know our Savior. The Savior has always asked us to follow him and to become perfected in him. In the New Testament he told us how we could when he was asked which is the greatest commandment of the law?  Mathew 23: 36-40 he responded:  "thou shalt love The Lord they God with all thy heart and with all thy soul and with all thy mind, this is the first and great commandment and the second is like unto it, thou shout love thy neighbor as thyself ."  Jesus is perfect.  How can we truly follow him, be like him?  We must learn to have charity.  Charity is the pure love of Christ and he desires that we obtain it so we can feel joy. Many confused investigators have asked me if all that is required of us is charity and love for our Lord and love for our neighbor, then why does tithing matter? Why do we have to keep the law of chastity? or Why do we have to live the Word of Wisdom?  Is love not enough?  Well love is enough and our love shows through the way we express it.  John 14:15 reads: “If ye love me keep my commandments”.  and in verse 21 it says, “he that hath my commandments and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me, and he that loveth me shall be loved of my father and I will love him and I will manifest myself to him.”

What a great promise. If we truly love the Lord our God, with all our heart and mind we will gladly and willingly keep his commandments. This is how we show our love.  This is how we learn how to love. The commandments are one of the greatest acts of charity.  They are instructions from a loving Heavenly Father that if are obeyed permit us to return to his presence as eternal families.  Living the commandments helps us to apply the atonement in our lives.  Christ’s atonement is the greatest act of charity shown to us.  As we obey with exactness we will not only feel the perfect love that our Father and his Son Jesus Christ have for us but we will be able to love our Father and our Savior and increase our capacity to love others.

President Thomas S Monson said, "We cannot truly love God if we do not love our fellow travelers on this mortal journey".  John 4:8 reads: “He that loveth not, knoweth not God; for God is love.” and later in verses 20 and 21 it says " 20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?  21 And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also."
We cannot claim that we know or love God, if we hate or dislike one of his children.  To come to know and to love our Father in Heaven, we must love all of his children.

When I first arrived in Peru, I came to understand what everyone meant when they said that Latin America has believing blood. (meaning that believing is in their blood) I noticed that in every corner there was a church. They were all different and almost all were missionary churches. I was worried that it might be confusing for me having to meet and talk to so many people with different beliefs of God and religion.  I was worried about our investigators who may stray when the other religions knocked their doors.  My testimony was strengthened of the restoration when I met a great and humble man that I love, named Rony.  Rony was the type that just loved to hear the word of God.  He let anybody in to teach him who showed up on his doorstep with a Bible.  He went to all the churches and read the Bible daily.  He had a strong interest in doctrine and was confused by how so many churches interpreted the scriptures to mean different things.  By the time we showed up on his doorstep, he was a little confused and unsure of which church was true, but he started to listen to us and as he felt the spirit of truth he accepted and completed all the invitations we committed him to.

On one of our first visits, we gave him a Book of Mormon and a couple days later we went back to visit him and he had already read up to 2 Nephi.  He went to church and even accepted the baptismal invitation but he was hesitant to put a date because he was still not sure that it was the true church. We did everything we could to help him resolve his doubts with scriptures and powerful testimony but nothing seemed to work.  One day I was on splits with another Elder and we had an appointment with Rony. I was a little nervous because we had planned on inviting him to be married to the woman that he was living and expecting a child with.  To be baptized you need to be living the commandments.  I was a new missionary, only 18 years old, with little experience and I was now counseling a couple that they needed to be married. We had a great lesson and the spirit was strong, strong enough to fill me with courage to invite him to be married and baptized.  In my broken Spanish, I communicated what the spirit wanted him to hear and to my surprise he said yes to the marriage and baptismal date. Even his wife, or rather girl friend, who had listened to the lessons but never had shown great interest in the church said yes to marriage and baptism. Feeling so happy but a little confused at the same time, I had asked what had changed? His response impacted my perspective of the Gospel. He said that at first it was tough to accept the doctrine of the church, having a religious background and having taken the lessons of missionaries from many churches. He explained that in these churches he felt something was missing. He could comprehend the message but sometimes felt fear or nothing at all but in the Church of Jesus Christ he felt love. He said for the fist time he had felt the love of God and the love and fellowship from the members. He said the people there really cared about him, they visited him, talked to him in church, served him, and did not judge him for his weaknesses and past sins. We loved him and desired his happiness and salvation and he was able to feel it and knew it was the true Church of God.  He was married and baptized a few weeks later with his wife Gloria. Soon after he was baptized, he brought us to his mother’s house so we could teach her and his sister the Gospel.  His first calling was a home teacher and he served with all his heart full of this new love and charity that he had experienced.

As a missionary knocking doors every day, we ran into many people with strong personal beliefs. Some would let us in, others would try to contend, some would yell and slam the door.  I have been assaulted, chased and even have had logs of wood thrown at me.  After all these experiences  I would ask myself, if they believe in God and love him, why do they treat us this way? Aren’t we their neighbor? aren’t they Christians?  trying hard not to judge them, I was always led back to a scripture that is found in John chapter 13:34-35  “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. 35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another." I learned that a requirement to follow Christ and be his true disciple is to have charity. It is easy to hate when you are hated and much harder to love those that persecute you.  As with all of us, I learned that the principles of charity needed to be applied by me and my companions.  By judging and hating those that rejected us, those who would disagree with us, or those who are different from us, would disqualify us as being true representatives of Christ, true disciples of the Savior. I found it very easy to love those that loved me, those that let me in and listened and fed me but hard to love those that despised me and rejected me.  Jesus condemns that way of thinking.  In Mathew 5:44,46  "44 ¶Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy. 44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;  46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?" For a while a had a prideful habit of saying !Gracias, Que tenga un buen dia! or thanks, have a nice day after every time a door was slammed in my face, and one of my companions would always say, Elder Harper, was that sarcastic?  I learned through loving companions that I needed to humble myself and strive to love others.  As I prayed daily to have charity, the anger that I once felt when I was rejected turned into a sorrow, realizing that although I didn’t know them, they were not rejecting me but the blessings of our Heavenly Father.

President Thomas S. Monson said, “Forgiveness should go hand-in-hand with love. In our families, as well as with our friends, there can be hurt feelings and disagreements. Again, it doesn’t really matter how small the issue was. It cannot and should not be left to canker, to fester, and ultimately to destroy. Blame keeps wounds open. Only forgiveness heals."

As the prophet says, "forgiveness has a healing power, a power that is only produced by charity and a deep love for the Savior." This was a lesson that I was able to learn from recent converts. When I arrived in my second-to-last area in the mission, La Victoria, I was stoked to see that my companion had been teaching a great family.  While teaching them they accepted a baptismal date.  We prepared them to be baptized. It was incredible to watch the spirit change them so much in such a short period of time. They decided to leave their worldly life and accept the Gospel. They are a very humble couple and don’t have much. When we met them they lived in a one-room adobe house that he rented from his father. Hebert, the husband, was low on work and they barely had enough to get by day-by-day.  Knowing their circumstances, I was super impressed because they were the most happy and loving couple. The gospel of Jesus Christ changed them, gave them purpose and filled them with happiness. They were fired up with a strong testimony of the gospel and were anxious to be be baptized.  They trusted in the Lord’s promise that they would be blessed as they would make this sacred covenant with him.  They had plans to be married and then baptized on the same day . I learned from them that happiness does not depend on what you have, how much you have or even the circumstances around you that one cannot control. Happiness is a decision that is a result of living the principles of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

After this family was married and baptized they faced many trials. The next week Hebert lost his job. There were days where they only had one sole to their name. (sole is the money system of Peru and one sole is equivalent to about 30 cents). Not once did I hear them complain and not once did I see their faith waiver.  Living the Gospel and demonstrating charity, they were fulfilled, and they were truly happy.  Under these dire circumstances they paid a full tithe.  They had faith in the commandments and did not doubt that The Lord would pull through and bless them.  Days later Hebert shared how the Lord blessed he and his family for paying their tithing.  He shared with accounts of random old friends that would come to his house, out of nowhere, to offer him day jobs. He was able to obtain consistent work for many days on end.

Herbert's  father was not happy about the changes his son had made in his life. He missed his old son that would drink with him.  He started to create great problems for Herbert and his wife and eventually kicked them out of the house that he rented them.  Herbert's dad and brothers disowned him and his wife.  Even though life seemed impossible, Herbert chose to keep the faith and the happiness they felt by living the gospel.  Months passed and Maria and Hebert had found a place of their own.  Because they continued to pay their tithing and trust in The Lord they received great blessings.  They were given callings in church and fulfilled them happily.  One day they received news that Herbert’s father had gotten sick and was living alone and needed help.  Despite the terrible treatment that their father had given them they eagerly tended to his needs and were with him in his sickness.  They had forgiven him for what he had done to them and loved him for who he was. Herbert and his wife Maria were able to apply charity into their lives and feel of the blessing and joy that comes from it.

In Moroni chapter 7:45 it reads:
"And charity suffereth long, and is kind, and envieth not, and is not puffed up, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil, and rejoiceth not in iniquity but rejoiceth in the truth, beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.”  In their hardest time Mariah and Hebert were able to be happy as they were kind, as they bore all things as they believed in all things and endured all things.

President Thomas Monson said, "Brothers and sisters, some of our greatest opportunities to demonstrate our love will be within the walls of our own homes." Love should be the very heart of family life, and yet sometimes it is not.

I served in a very family-centered mission. My president wanted us to find families that were prepared to receive the gospel. We had strict rules like we could not teach youth unless their parents were present as well, and they could not be baptized until they were 18 unless their parents were already members or baptized with them. These rules motivated us to find prepared families and to teach the proclamation to the world.

One day when my companion and I were knocking doors we came upon a man who opened up to us. At first he was not interested in our message  but when we shared the proclamation and testified of the eternal nature of families, he said we could try to come back later.  It seemed like he was just being nice but not interested. The next week we were contacting on the same street and had forgotten about this man.  Suddenly we saw his head pop out of the little window on his front door. Many homes in Peru have a little opening on the door that they can open to see who is there.  Kind of a big version of the peep holes that we have but not as discrete.  It can be funny when they stick their heads out the opening, see you, and close it quick pretending they are not home.  This man looked at us and then closed it real fast.  I felt prompted to go knock on his door.  My companion protested saying that he had already seen us and that he wasn’t going to listen to us.  The feeling would not leave me so we decided to go anyways.  He opened the door and let us in. When we sat down he asked us where we have been and that he had been waiting for us. His name was Marco and he was alone at the time but we felt prompted to teach him about the proclamation to the world on marriage and family. In the first lesson he opened up to us and told us that he was having family struggles and that his marriage was going downhill. He asked us to come back so we could meet with his wife and kids.

A few days later we returned and were able to meet his wife Jessica.  She was super loving and receptive from the start. She insisted on making us a snack every time we came over. Since the first lesson they were excited for a change in their family and began to read the Book of Mormon and pray as a family every night. They even attended church weekly.  Jessica always would tell us how surprised she was that her husband let us in that day. She said he would slam the door in all of the other churches faces and wanted nothing to do with religion.  Before we met Marco he drank heavily, he was unkind to his family and was generally unhappy.  When Marco felt the spirit of the proclamation he stopped drinking right away.  He was super into coffee but after teaching the Word of Wisdom he dropped that as well, shocking the whole family.  One day Jessica was talking to the mother of her little 4-year-old daughter’s friend form school. Jessica's daughter, Valeria, had told her friend that  her house was like heaven.  She said her parents didn't fight anymore, her dad didn't drink anymore. She told her friend that they went to church and  prayed and the hermanitos (what they called us, little friends) always visited them. Valeria responded,...can the hermanitos come to my house so my house can be like heaven?  The Savior taught that we must become as little children to inherit the kingdom of God.  The simple testimony of a 4-year-old has left a lasting impression on me. When the gospel principles are applied in the home, charity is found and love is felt and any home can be just like heaven.

Brothers and sisters, may we make our homes heaven by our daily demonstration of charity, the pure love of Christ.

I am so grateful to have served God’s children in Peru over these past 2 years.  I have learned to love and to have charity from so many humble and happy people in Peru who have so little earthly possessions.  I love the Peruvian people.  My mission has been the two hardest years of my life but also the two happiest years of my life, and I would go back today if they would let me.  A mission truly is... the best two years. I know that I am not perfect and that I have many defects but I know that my Father in Heaven and my Savior love me and that when I apply the atonement in my life and have charity I can be happy, regardless of any circumstances that could bring me down.

I WOULD SERVE ANOTHER IF I COULD....

Family!

Well it really has been a great week! and I can't believe that this will be my last time writing from Peru.  I still can't believe that my time is up and I don't want to believe it. It's been a little tough for me but I know I need to accept God's Will.  I've been praying a lot and I feel good and confident!! Ready to work hard this week, 4th quarter 4th down and ready to play!

Last Monday was Peru vs Chile in the South American Cup.  We had a full agenda but every appointment fell through.  We were a little discouraged cuz we tried contacting and every house was watching the game, even the old ladies were.  We thought for a second maybe it was ridiculous trying to proselyte when everyone was occupied,  maybe we would be more productive studying or something else but we made the firm decision to keep working even though we had a strong obstacle. Well we were rejected many more times and yelled at but we knocked a door and a lady answered who had listened to the Elders before.  She told us her husband was busy watching but she would love to listen to us through the door. We shared with her a message of the family and she loved it and asked for us to come back. It def was a success for the night.

We went to another house of and old investigator and he let us in and turned off the game and rounded his whole family up to listen to us.  We were able to teach about the plan of salvation and his wife, who usually avoids us, opened up and started asking us many questions and we taught her how she could find these answers. It was definitely a great night and a blessing for having endured and deciding to be obedient.

We also were able to teach a less active young couple that are going through hard times. They have had lots of marriage problems and have lost a baby. The spirit was felt when they were able to learn about temples and how they could one day be sealed as a family to their daughter.  They have it as a goal and we will be working hard with them so they can reach it soon.

Well got no time.  Lame last letter but you can complain to my face next week! haha just kidding. So grateful for all your support and love! I have loved my mission and I am leaving with no regrets.  I would serve another if I could.  It's been the hardest thing I've ever done and it has really helped me come to know my Savior.  Younglings! Don't even think about missing this experience cuz you will regret it for the rest of your life

WE WERE TREATED LIKE DIRT......

Family,

Well it has been a pretty good week. We are searching hard for them elect and knocking doors like crazy. To be honest, it's been a little tough.  We still haven't met anyone that has lots of interest in hearing our message. There was one family we met last week.  I think I told a story about them, but they are super hard to find cuz they work until late at night. We have been teaching this old couple that have recently been activated and they are awesome.  They both have gotten their callings in church and this week we taught them about the temple and sealings.  They have made goals to go to the temple and they are super excited to be sealed for the eternities.

This week I was able to be reunited with my good old bud Diego from Las Brisas. He's a cool kid that always taught with us in the Brisas and we became really good friends. Well he heard that I'm back in town so he called us up and came with us to visit one day this week. It was awesome seeing him and hows he's progressed.  He will be going on a mish in about 6 months.

Tuesday we went to a meeting of trainers and got to hear some inspirational words of President. Well I'm trying to think of things to say hhahaha   uhhhh.......

We are also teaching this couple, Piero and Liz.  They have two kids and having been listening to the missionaries for almost a year.  They have the desire to be baptized but they aren't married and have a few other problems but they are  great examples to me.  They have a great testimony of the Book of Mormon and read it every day.  They say it's a page turner and sometimes they can't put it down, and whenever we teach them principles about the gospel they always relate it to what they are reading in the Book of Mormon and recite verses.  They are a great example of how to love the scriptures and apply them in our daily life.

Well my area is like half filthy rich and half poor and dangerous.  The sisters were robbed in the streets in the poor part but I'm a little familiar with the poorer part cuz it limits with the Brisas.  This week we spent two hours in the rich part contacting and we were treated like dirt.  I know I shouldn't be racist but I prefer the humble people haha.  But I know that there are good people everywhere and the Lord is preparing their hearts to hear the gospel. Well until next week.

SHE just LAUGHED and TOLD ME it's IMPOSSIBLE....

Well happy Father's Day Dad! and Papa and Grandpa and all the rest of you! and happy birthday Riley 25??? Your old.  and happy birthday Isabel, 17 equally gross.  Our fam is too old now. What happened to the days when we were young and hip?

Well I'm in 9 de Octubre, an area that limits with Las Brisas.  It has been a good and crazy week. I was super nervous to say goodbye to Marco and Jessica cuz they were hoping on having me for a month longer but everything went well.  They were surprised and a little bummed but they sounded firm in their decision to be married and baptized. We put the goal with them for the 25 of July I hope the sisters are working hard with them.

We are basically starting from scratch here cuz the sisters were teaching a bunch of old ladies that live alone so it's almost impossible to teach them.  But we are knocking lots of doors and finding some people that have the potential to progress.  My pensionista is an old catholic lady but her daughter is a member and they are filthy rich.  It's definitely the richest house I've been in since entering Peru.  I told the pension's daughter to not feed me too much cuz I don't want to go home fat and she just laughed and told me it's impossible.  She cooks super good and gives ice cream after every meal, but don't worry, I'm still running in the mornings.

This week was the dedication of the Trujillo temple and it was amazing! I was like 8 years old when I went to the Newport Beach temple dedication so i didn't remember much but it was sweet. President Uchtdorf came with Elder Bednar and the talks were amazing, and it's sad cuz I'll never be able to read or hear the talks again.  We assisted the 3 sessions.  They basically just hit hard on always having a temple recommend no matter how far you live away from a temple or any other circumstance and how we need to do the work for our dead.  It got me pumped to get back to my temple in Newport to do some work.

Well this area is super dangerous.  The sisters were robbed and the robbers stole their camera.

That's all I got sooryyy, love you guys.

.......her HOUSE is HEAVEN....

Familia!!!

Well so much has happened in this past week; it's pretty crazy.  We have been working super hard with Marco and Jessica and last week we put a date with them. They accepted it but this week we found out that there isn't going to be a Matrimonio Masivo, which is a community wedding and it's super cheap.  Marco and Jessica are not going to be able to pay for a normal wedding and we found out that the next Matrimonio Masivo is el 25 de Julio, 2 weeks after I'm home.  We had a great lesson with them this week.  We brought our mission leader and he bore a powerful testimony. Jessica still has some doubts.  All her family and friends are from other churches that criticize our church but she is doing all she can to get a testimony like going to church and staying all 3 hours.  They are praying as a  family and reading the scriptures.

Jessica told us that her 4 year old daughter told her little playmate that her house is Heaven and that her dad doesn't drink anymore and her parents don't fight.  The playmate told her mom that and asked her mom if the hermanitos (affectionate word for little brothers. I guess that's what they call the missionaries : ) )  could go to her house too so her dad would change and so her house could be Heaven.. It amazes me how a 4 year old girl can notice such a difference in her home when gospel principles are applied.  I think we should all ask ourselves if our home is a Heaven and do everything possible to make it that way. Well their faith is growing and I know that they are converting little by little but now I'm a little worried for them.

Saturday at  5 in the afternoon we were knocking doors and President called.  He called to inform us that my comp and I would be having an emergency change.  He said there are sisters that are in a dangerous area called 9 de Octubre (I've been told it is one of the most dangerous areas in the mission) and he's pulling them out and putting me there with my hijo and the sisters are coming here. Nobody knows so it will be difficult saying goodbye, especially to Marco and Jessica cuz it was hard for them when my old comp left. Well I'll be praying for them so they can accept the new missionaries and keep with their desires to be married and baptized.  I'm being white-washed so it will be tough but I'm down for the challenge and honored that President trusts in me. Well that is all my friends.  It's gonna be a weird week but I'm happy and ready to work.

THIS will be MY 3rd SON & HE will KILL ME like I KILLED my FATHER, haha........

Well family and friends,

I couldn't be happier; it has been a good week.   Like God promised Abraham that his descendants would be like the sands of the sea, or something like that, I think I have received that same promise.. I'm training again...President thought it would be fun to not tell anyone and to see the look on everyones' faces when he announced that they were training.  This will be #3.  I just don't know what to do with all my children. They are all great kids and I'll be leaving them soon.  I'm glad that I have loved and have been besties with all my comps; I didn't have a single jerk.  I have been blessed and I am going to miss all of them.

So this will be my third son and he will kill me like I killed my father, haha.   His name is Elder Chufandama from Lima Callo.  He's a big teddy bear, he's sweet, he's definitely the answer to my prayers. Before the change I was praying that I could learn to be more humble and that I could learn to work harder for my last change. Well mi hijito is super humble and a hard worker and he's teaching me a lot.  Every time he goes to the store to buy something, he buys two and gives the other to me.  I'll come out of the shower in the morning and I'll find him shining my shoes.  I love the kid. We are pretty good friends already and he is probably everything that I'm not haha.  He's super social and good at connecting with the investigators.  Well I'm definitely gonna enjoy my last change and work my butt off.

My testimony of the Book of Mormon has been strengthened this week.  We've been using it a lot more with our investigators.  We are teaching a Catholic Priest right now, who is reading The Book of Mormon every day, along with his Bible.  He is super sweet and he really listens to us. He says that he is changing, becoming more patient and that his love for others and Jesus Christ has increased. We are working on him so he will come to know that this is the true church.

Flabio, a kid who we have been teaching,  is also reading the Book of Mormon every day.  He has been praying to know if it is true.  His parents aren't too happy about it.  He asked them if they would start reading and pray to know if it is true and they are doing it!!!  The Book of Mormon has power to change lives and to help us be more like Christ.  I love this Gospel.

I have see some miracles as well in this past week.  When I found out I was staying here in La Victoria my mind just went to Marco and Jessica and how grateful that I'll be with them another change to help them prepare. The first lesson we had with them this week we talked about the baptismal covenant and the blessings we receive when we are baptized. We invited them to be baptized the 11th of July. They looked at each other and said I guess this means we are getting married. Marco said yes and Jessica was a little doubtful. We committed them to converse about it and to pray about it so they could receive an answer.  Oh and I forget to say that when we first got there, they were super stressed and a little discouraged cuz they had lost their jobs that day. Well the next day we found them in the park and Marco told me all excited ¨Harper, our prayers have been answered.  We both have found a new job already and we have decided to be married and baptized¨ I just felt so happy as he said these words to me. We put goals with them so they can achieve their goal of baptism. They never have attended all three hours, but this Sunday they stayed all three hours and loved it.  The only challenge will be marriage but we are gonna do everything possible so they can be married this month so they can be baptized the 11th of July.

Thanks for all the support.  I love you guys and I'll see you soon.

I DESIRE to DWELL among this PEOPLE for a TIME...perhaps UNTIL the DAY I DIE....

Familia!

Well the news is out....... I'm dying here in La Victoria.  I thought I was gonna have a change or stay with my comp but turns out, only after having 2 changes here, my comp is going and I will be receiving another comp tomorrow. If I would have known that I was going to finish my mish here when I first came, I would have recited the same words that Ammon said to King Lamoni in Alma 17:23 jaja.   23 And Ammon said unto him: Yea, I desire to dwell among this people for a time; yea, and perhaps until the day I die.  Im going to die in Imperio.  Well to be honest, I was dreaming about ending my mish maybe in another place to start another short adventure.  But I have to say that even though it's a super hard area, I've probably knocked every door,  I'm happy to be here and to continue giving my all to the Lord if this is where the Lord wants me to be.

Let's hope I live 6 weeks more.  Saturday night I couldn't get to sleep cuz there was a party outside our house.  I woke up Sunday at 5 am and the party was still going at 6:30. When I got out of bed I heard people screaming and gun shots.  Last night when we were walking back to the house we stopped to look at our agenda to see if we could visit one more person and a taxi stopped in front of us.  I felt that we should keep walking cuz the guy creeped me out. We walked away then 10 seconds later we heard a girl scream. The guy who had gotten out of the taxi robbed some random girl that walked by where we were standing 10 seconds before.  Crazy stuff but I'm still alive haha.

This week we helped Marco and Jessica move.  They were super grateful and surprised that we came. Where they are living is like a small apartment and there are many other rooms of families surrounding them.  Something that impressed me was that Marco told me, "There are like 5 complete families living here. We are gonna' have to talk to them and get to know them so we can invite them to listen to you guys as well".  It's awesome that as an investigator he's already experiencing the desire to share the Gospel with all.

Well I'm gonna work super hard with this family so they can be baptized before I leave.  They are worrying me a bit cuz they haven't been to church for a few weeks,  Jessica's birthday and then Sunday they didn't go cuz of the move but we are gonna have the ward involved more so they can make this decision.

We had stake conference and it was amazing! President Williams spoke as un setenta de Area de Lima (an area Seventy for Lima). It was powerful and there was a focus on the work of salvation. There was a spirit that was felt strong and everyone left edified and determined to be better.  That's why we are a little sad that Marco and Jessica didn't make it . Something that has been helping me is studying the Book of Mormon and trying to analyze every verse and take notes about every verse in my journal. It's helped me a lot to have productive studies and to feel the spirit.  I recommend it !!
Well I've got little time and got to transfer some of my comps pics to my card, but i promise to write more next time..love you guys!!

I WILL GLADLY GO WHERE THE LORD WANTS ME.....

Familia,

Well this week was actually a really great week.  In the past weeks we have been struggling to find new investigators but this week we knocked a lot of doors, more doors than I've probably knocked in my mish, but it's what I love.  I love meeting new people and testifying.  There are always super humble people that will receive us without us having to say much and right off the bat they recognize us as servants of the Lord and then there are others who reject us harshly, people who don't have faith or people from other churches. Well this week we were able to find several people that were willing to hear us and are interested in investigating the church.  We feel blessed and are praying that these seeds we are planting will be harvested soon or in later times.

Well we were able have the Family night with Maria and Hebert and Marco and Jessica. It was a successful family night. We sang, watched a part of the movie Together Forever, we taught, we testified, we shared scriptures but the most spiritual and most impactful part was when Maria and Hebert shared their testimony. As new members I think it was their first time sharing the gospel.  At first we could tell that they were a little nervous but they opened up and were able to bear a powerful testimony of their conversion and how the gospel has been able to change their lives and how it continues blessing them and helping them overcome their troubles. They have a really strong testimony of diezmo (tithing).  Hebert doesn't have a secure job and when they first entered the church their family criticized them and ended up kicking them out of their house.  Well they had to find somewhere to live and Hebert had no work but they understood the promise the Lord gives us in Malachi when He says that he will open the windows of heaven for those who pay an honest tithe. Well from the beginning this family has paid, even in these hard times and they say that miraculously Hebert always finds work to support their family weeks or days at a time.  The Lord always provides and the best part of all is that they have always been super happy during their hard times and good times because of their trust in the Lord.  I've been reading Our Legacy, a book about the pioneers, and it describes how happy the saints were even though they had so many afflictions. Well I've come to realize that these hardships bring us happiness as we learn to keep the commandments and rely on the Lord.   Well anyways.... Marco and Jessica had a great experience.

President told us that Jampier has to read all of the Book of Mormon before being baptized. We thought that this news would be discouraging for this youngling cuz he asks us in almost every visit when he can be baptized. But when we told him, he told us that it was a great idea and that our leaders were wise and that he knew it would help him become a faithful member of the church. He's a great example of following the will of God and humbly following the counsel of our leaders.

Well I already have 6 months in this area but I only have one cambio left.  My whole zone makes fun of me and tells me I'm dying here.  I have no idea if I will go next week or if I will die but I will gladly go where the Lord wants me. Love you guys and so grateful for all your love and support.

I STILL REMEMBER the WISE WORDS of my BROTHER, RILEY....

3 Peruvians from Orange County, California (Baylor Harper, Camille Rasmussen, Damon Jarman)
Familia,

Well it definitely was a tough week.  Tuesday was super sweet.  It was a multizona where a bunch of zones get together and Presidente talks to us for five hours.  Presidente is awesome and a real inspirational speaker.  He emphasized the power of the word and talked about the importance of really knowing the scriptures and using them with our investigators.  He talked about how the scriptures are one of the strongest sources of our personal conversion and the conversion of investigators.  As missionaries we read more than an hour every day but I've been trying hard to get more out of it and to use them with more power in the lessons.  I remember the words of Brother Greiner in a mish prep class.  He said memorize to eternalize.  So I'm trying hard to memorize more scriptures as well.  Presidente also talked about working with members and how this is a weak point in our mish.

We are having difficulties getting references from the members.  They don't give us anything but what we are starting to do is bring the investigators to the houses of the members. We had a cool lesson with Maria and Hebert this week, our new converts.  We talked to them about the importance of missionary work and reminded them how the gospel changed their lives and how they can help others change as well through this gospel.  We asked them if we could bring Marco and Jessica to their house this Tuesday to do a noche de hogar (family night) and they accepted with great love and excitement without even thinking ( I love them). We even planned and practiced the lesson with them.  When we practiced the lesson they bore their simple testimony that was so powerful to me even though it was just a practice.  It made me remember a quote that's in Preach My Gospel, that every time we have personal experiences with the atonement in our life, we have natural desires to help others come to Christ.  That's when we should ask ourselves, Do I have that desire? Do I apply the atonement in my life daily?

I still remember the wise words of my brother, Riley, the night before I left for Peru. I asked how I could be a good missionary and he told me I could achieve this if I learned to apply the atonement in my life daily.  At first I didn't understand, even though I thought I did,  but now I do and I'm striving harder to repent and come closer to Christ, which helps me have a stronger desire to help others.

Multi Zone Conference
We are also teaching this Catholic dude.  He's got a big calling in the Catholic church but he loves to listen to us.  We asked him if he knew anyone we could teach.  He said I'm not sure but I'll ask my congregation.  The next week, he told us that he talked to his members and that there are over 50 families that might be interested in hearing us and he was going to get us a list of their names so we can visit them.

Well the work is hard, but I love it.  I'm happy and excited to keep working.  It's the kick and I'm going hard.

"I'M NOT MOVING UNTIL YOU CAN TALK TO YOUR FAM...."

Familia,
Well it was awesome seeing you guys and talking to you guys yesterday! Happy Mother's Day Mom. I love you and hope you had a great day. Hope you guys enjoyed the huevos rancheros, and thanks for the patience yesterday.  The Cyber-boss was cool about it even though his internet-cyber was soo hot inside.  He was like,  "I'm not moving until you can talk to your fam". We talked a little bit about the mish with him as well. I only sent one picture but there's more.  My cam died on P-day when we were taking pics and my comp forgot to bring his right now but next week ill send a ton.

It was a good week overall.  It started out pretty hard.  Once again we are having to leave investigators who aren't progressing and we are left without people to visit.  At the beginning of the week we were walking in circles but we started praying hard to find new people  and to have references from members and then we got off our knees and started hitting doors. Well, we have had success.  I know every day the Lord is preparing people for us to teach and that it is our responsibility to find the elect, those whose hearts have been prepared to receive the restored gospel of Jesus Christ.

We had a few cool experiences this week.  One of them was with Marco and Jessica.  On Saturday we prepared to teach them the Word of Wisdom and in the morning we prayed and planned. We prayed that Marco would accept it.  We were a little nervous cuz we knew that he drinks and that he's obsessed with his Colombian cafe hah. Well when we got to their house, we taught the lesson and the spirit was felt.  To our surprise, Jessica told us about how alcohol has caused lots of problems in their home and how they've almost separated cuz of it.  How recently Marco has been changing a lot  and has stopped drinking, but then she laughed and said but I don't think he will stop drinking his cafe. He loves his cafe. Marco turned to us and almost a little offended he said that if he was able to stop drinking that he could stop  drinking cafe.  And then he told his wife to throw all the cafe away. Well after the lesson, they pulled out all the stuff they had and asked us what was good and what was bad. It showed us that this fam has the desire to serve the lord.

We taught another lesson  on Sunday to a family we have recently found about  the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We talked about Mother's Day.  He expressed to us that his mother had died, but he was super alert when we taught him and he committed to be baptized but without a date. Then he asked us if families are eternal and if it's necessary to be baptized to the enter the Kingdom of God.   He asked how he could return to see his mom.  Well with great joy in our hearts we were able to explain more about the plan and he loved it.  There are lots of people to teach and to bring to this gospel.  I love being a missionary and I love all of you.  Thanks for the support.

WE are KNOCKING DOORS ALL DAY EVERY DAY......

Family!

Well I kept my promise and took lots of pics this week. I'm sure you will be proud. I hope you folks recover fast from your illness.  Mom I have no idea about my flight plans, but don't make me trunkey haha.

This week has been a little slow.  We are working hard but we are working alone, meaning the members aren't helping us. We are knocking doors all day, every day.  I'm a huge fan of door knocking but it's not as successful as teaching the references from members. So our goal for this next week is to work hard with members. I think we are going to work with Maria and Herbert to be friends with Marco and Jessica. This week they sat together at church and talked a bit.  We played some pool this week on pday.  Hebert used to make pool tables and in his dad's house they have a few so he took us to play pool with him and schooled us, but it was a real good time.

This week we have been visiting Marco and Jessica a lot.  They are progressing so well.  Jessica is still in shock that Marco listens to us and is changing. She always says how before he would slam the door in  the faces of the preachers and that he has a hard heart, but when we contacted him he was nice and let us in right away.  I know that God prepared his heart to receive the restored gospel. He used to be a big drinker as well, but Jessica says that they had a dinner with his work and every one was drinking but he said no and the whole time people were making fun of him and tempting him but he just drank water. This week we were reading the Book of Mormon with him and he stopped us and asked us how he could really know that God has forgiven him and how could he repent. I feel like they could be baptized soon but they need to get married first.

This week we also participated in a ward activity. We taught the lesson on the family and how the family can be strengthened with the gospel and how the family can be together forever. We played some charades, which was hilarious as well. We met a returned missionary who came home this week. It was weird seeing that.  He went to Brazil so he speaks Spanish funny cuz he had to learn Portuguese.  Well he taught with us all Sunday.  It was fun to see the RM shock in live-action and served as a little warning for me haha. Well I love you guys and hope to talk to you Sunday.
